The Monarch Formally Strips Prince Andrew of Royal Highness Title and Prince Title
Through a definitive move, King Charles has formally removed the former Duke of York of his HRH style and his princely title.
The changes were made official by publishing royal documents under the official state seal, which were published in the Gazette.
The official notice stated: “His Majesty has been graciously inclined by letters patent under the Great Seal of the Realm dated 3 November 2025 to declare that the individual in question shall cease to be entitled to hold and enjoy the designation of ‘HRH’ and the titular dignity of ‘Prince’.”
A separate record affirmed the removal of the Duke of York from the roll of peerage, effective immediately.
The notice stated: “His Majesty has been pleased to direct by royal warrant under his royal sign manual dated 30 October 2025 to instruct his government minister to ensure the Duke of York to be removed from the roll of the peerage.”
Context of the Decision
The decision comes after increasing controversy over the former prince's links to the late financier Jeffrey Epstein, exacerbated by the posthumous publication of a memoir by Virginia Giuffre.
The author claimed that she was assaulted by the former prince after being trafficked by Epstein, claims that Andrew has consistently strenuously denied.
Procedure of Title Removal
Charles utilized his monarchical powers—accepted authorities held by the monarch—after consultation with government advisers, instead of through legislative action.
Royal instruments and warrants are tools of this authority, used to grant or revoke honors and styles.
Because the Royal Highness designation is conferred by such documents, it can be withdrawn through the same process.
Further Actions and Backing
Following the palace statement, the senior legal official was directed to prepare the required paperwork for the removal of titles.
This action also includes Andrew relinquishing his lease on Royal Lodge, a 30-room royal property where he has lived for two decades.
Officials fully supported the monarch's move.
Retained Honor
Despite the stripping of honors, it was confirmed that Mountbatten Windsor will retain his South Atlantic medal, awarded for his service as a Sea King helicopter co-pilot during the Falklands conflict.
