World Health Organization Faces Significant Staff Reduction After United States Financial Pullout
This international health organization revealed intentions to cut its workforce by almost a fourth – totaling over two thousand positions – before the middle of 2026.
Financial Crisis Triggers Substantial Restructuring
This decision follows following the US, previously the agency's biggest donor, pulled out funding earlier this period.
The US government was contributing approximately eighteen percent of the organization's total funding, creating a significant financial gap.
Projected Staff Reductions
Based on internal estimates, the staff will decrease from 9,401 positions in January 2025 to around seven thousand and thirty by mid-2026.
The reduction of 2,371 positions comprises staff reductions, retirements, and natural departures.
"This year was among the most difficult in our history, as we have navigated a painful but essential journey of prioritisation and restructuring," commented the organization's leader.
Budget Shortfall Remains
The Geneva-based body now confronts a budget shortfall of $1.06bn for the 2026-2027 biennium, representing almost a quarter of its total budget.
The figure represents an reduction from a previous projected shortfall of $1.7bn reported in May.
Not Included Finances
The budget projections do not include an additional $1.1bn in potential contributions from ongoing negotiations with multiple donors.
A representative for the organization noted that the present unfunded portion of the budget is actually lower than in earlier periods, crediting this to multiple factors:
- Reduced total budget
- The launch of a new fundraising effort
- Higher in participating countries' required fees
This realignment initiative is currently approaching its completion, allowing the agency to move forward with a reshaped operational model.
